The best bakery in Oaxaca also has a trendy cafe next door, not that surprised but their most popular dish is avocado toast. The cafe has excellent coffee and cakes, and is located in a patio with terrace seating upstairs.

6. Zócalo

The Zócalo is the central square in Oaxaca city, and it is a great place to people-watch. The square is surrounded by portales (arcades) and is shaded by tall trees. The adjoining Alameda plaza is also a great place for people-watching, with its trinket-toting vendors, street performers and informal clothes market.

By day and night, the square is bustling with life, as marimba ensembles, brass bands and roving buskers float their melodies among the crowds, hawkers try to offload pretty carpets and hideous balloons, and lovers parade in slow rounds under the trees.

Give your legs a rest after wandering in the parade, don't just passed by this swanky tasting room.

7. Mezcaloteca

This is the best place in the city to visit if you want to learn about mezcal. The staff here can teach you about how mezcal is made, and you will get a crash course in how to taste it and what to look for in a quality product.

Call ahead to book a tasting session, and come prepared to ask questions. The hosts will offer you a selection from the house brands based on your tastes. They work with small-batch producers to create a number of unique, blended, wild-crafted and aged mezcals that can't be found anywhere else.

Punta Conejo is a rocky cape located at the west end of Mazunte beach. It is a great place to hike at sunset, with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. To get to the cape, take the lane toward Playa Mermejita off Calle Rinconcito, and go left up the track immediately after the cemetery.
